During Teacher Appreciation Week Brittany Caulkins of Maryland Elementary, and Kempton Dual-Language Academy’s Sandy Collins were honored by the San Diego Honda Dealers. Each teacher received $5,000 in classroom supplies.
The honors were a surprise to each teacher, who thought that they were bringing their students to an assembly, only to find representatives of Honda waiting to unveil their awards to the cheers of students and fellow staff.
Brittany was nominated by her mother, Noelle, who inspired her to become a teacher. To make the day even sweeter, in the audience for the award was her daughter who is a 3rd grader at Maryland.
She engages students in studying math, science, and art, often using music and art to draw connections to those subjects for her students. Brittany also serves as the theatre teacher at Maryland, rehearsing 3-days a week, and is currently working on a production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
At Kempton Academy, Sandy Collins was honored by her colleagues for her outstanding work with students with special needs, creating exceptional learning and support environments. She was also honored for her heroic efforts during the flooding in January.
Sandy was on a lunch break when she heard that students were trapped in a classroom due to water about 2-3ft high, doors would not open. She worked with the Principal, janitor, and another teacher (Alejandro Sanchez) to rescue the kids.
We are grateful for these fantastic teachers and all that they give to our students, families, and their fellow staff. Congratulations on your well-deserved honors!
