Welcome to the Extended Student Services (ESS) expanded learning program! We’re thrilled to have you join our community. ESS offers a safe, nurturing environment where your student can thrive through various creative, recreational, and educational activities to support their social, emotional, and physical growth.

Since 1976, we’ve proudly provided outstanding services to the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District (LMSV) community. ESS is a pre-paid, fee-based, self-supporting program governed by the LMSV Department of ESS.

Excitingly, the State of California has recently passed legislation providing funding for afterschool and summer or intersession enrichment opportunities for students. In LMSV, access to these opportunities will be primarily provided through our ESS program. Enrollment in ESS through this state-funded program depends on the availability of funding, space in the ESS program at your school, and eligibility criteria. You may even qualify for free services—please visit our ASES Grant and ELOP page for more information.

Our program is open to all students in Transitional Kindergarten through eighth grade enrolled in LMSV schools. For your convenience, we operate Monday through Friday, from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm during the school year and most school breaks.

We’re excited to partner with you and your student for an enriching experience!

Per the California Department of Education Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) grant requirements, unduplicated students will receive priority registration. Unduplicated students are defined as one or more of the following:

  • Homeless/foster youth
  • Eligible for a free or reduced-price meal

Other Information

ESS Snack

Our LMSV Child Nutrition Department provides a daily afternoon snack for your child after school in ESS. All foods on the snack menu must meet specific guidelines by the USDA. The foods listed on the snack menus are specially developed for School Food Programs so they can meet these USDA guidelines and also the California State Guidelines, which is no trans fat. These foods are not the same types of foods you would buy in a retail store. More and more manufacturers are working tirelessly to make items to help us meet the requirements as well as meet the strong demand from child nutrition directors and parents to have healthier items to serve. The brownie is a low fat brownie made with applesauce and cocoa. All cookies are whole grain with no trans fat as well. The chips are baked and reduced fat.

The ESS Snack menu is available for viewing on the ESS Parent Information Board at your child’s ESS school site.

Menus are also posted to this website monthly (see below). If you have questions regarding ESS snack, please see your Site Lead.
